Another Round and Flee selected for Cannes

CANNES 2020. Thomas Vinterberg's drama 'Another Round' and Jonas Poher Rasmussen's animated documentary 'Flee' are selected for the 73rd edition of the Cannes Festival.

The Cannes Festival announced Wednesday evening the Official Selection of the 73rd edition. Revealed as part of the line-up are Thomas Vinterberg's drama 'Another Round' and Jonas Poher Rasmussen's animated documentary 'Flee'.

The films in the Official Selection of the Cannes Festival, like many other festivals worldwide marked by the profound changes due to the corona pandemic, will this year be awarded the Cannes stamp of approval upon their release in cinemas and screenings at a range of festivals later in the year.

Another Round by Thomas Vinterberg

'Another Round' marks the third time Thomas Vinterberg is part of the Official Selection at Cannes. His 'Festen' particitated in 1998, where it took home the Jury Award, and in 2012 'The Hunt' won three prizes, including to Mads Mikkelsen for best actor.

The film has its starting point in the theory that we should be born with a small amount of alcohol in our blood, and that modest inebriation opens our minds to the world around us, diminishing our problems and increasing our creativity. Heartened by that theory, Martin and three of his friends, all weary high school teachers, embark on an experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday. If Churchill won WW2 in a heavy daze of alcohol, who knows what a few drops might do for them and their students?

Vinterberg collaborates with Mads Mikkelsen for the first time since 'The Hunt'. Mikkelsen plays Martin, while the other three main characters are played by Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe. Players in other key roles are Maria Bonnevie, Helene Reingaard Neumann and Susse Wold.

'Another Round' is written by Thomas Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm. The film is produced by Sisse Graum Jørgensen and Kasper Dissing for Zentropa in co-production with Film i Väst, Zentropa Sweden, Topkapi Films and Zentropa Netherlands with support from the Danish Film Institute, TV 2 DENMARK, Eurimages, the Netherlands Film Fund, Svenska Filminstitutet, the Netherlands Film Production Incentive and the MEDIA Programme of the European Union. International sales are handled by TrustNordisk. The film has already sold to more than 30 territories and is released in local theatres on 24 September.

Flee by Jonas Poher Rasmussen

The animated documentary 'Flee' is the true story about a man’s need to confront his past in order to truly have a future. Amin arrived as an unaccompanied minor in Denmark from Afghanistan. Today, at 36, he is a successful academic and is getting married to his long-time boyfriend. A secret he has been hiding for over 20 years threatens to ruin the life he has built for himself. For the first time he is sharing his story with his close friend.

He also directed the documentary ‘What He Did’ (2015), which won the film critics' Fipresci award at Thessaloniki Film Festival.

'Flee' is produced by Monica Hellström, Signe Byrge Sørensen and Charlotte De La Gournerie for Final Cut for Real and Sun Creature and co-produced by Vivement Lundi ! (France), Most Film (Sweden) and Mer Film (Norway).

The film is a co-production with ARTE France, VPRO, and it has received support from, among other backers, the Danish Film Institute, the Swedish Film Institute, the Norwegian Film Institute, Nordic Film and TV Fond, Copenhagen Film Fund, West Danish Film Fund and the Creative Europe Programme.
