Director Louise Unmack Kjeldsen is in her early fifties when her life is turned upside down. Once active and busy, she suddenly finds herself struggling with insomnia, sadness, and mental fog—without at first connecting it to menopause. When she realizes the link between declining estrogen levels and her mental state, it marks the beginning of a journey into one of the most unexplored areas of women’s health. She follows three scientists who, while uncovering how menopause can have profound consequences for women, must also battle lack of funding and resistance to their research. The film weaves scientific discoveries together with moving stories from women around the world, who share experiences marked by vulnerability, humour, and strength. Archival footage and animation place menopause in a historical and cultural context, exposing taboos and patriarchal biases. Yet the project raises dilemmas: Could science threaten women’s equality by portraying them as fragile—or open new pathways to understanding life, the body, and culture?
