The writer-director makes no bones about his debts to R.W. Fassbinder and to Robert Bresson, to say nothing of Sigmund Freud in his exploration of the child within the man, in this case a lonely postman who opens other people's mail and imagines their loving words to be written for him. He makes friends with a woman (a psychology student who uses him). He runs amuck and commits a murder.
