His name was Louis Marcussen, but he called himself Ovartaci. In this life he was an artist, but he had lived thousands of lives. As a butterfly, a Chinaman, an Egyptian, a tiger, and a puma. As a man, but mostly as a woman. Ovartaci completed his painter's apprenticeship in Ebeltoft, and in 1923 he emigrated to Argentina, where he became mentally ill. Six years later he returned home and was committed to the psychiatric hospital, Aarhus, where he produced a huge amount of art until his death in 1985. Starting out from his paintings and sculptures, which are formed as a strange tribute to femininity, the film describes Ovartaci's metamorphosis and self-inflicted sex change.
