Ruben Östlund

(1974 – )

Director, screenwriter. Born 1974. Graduated in filmmaking from Göteborg University in 2001.

Östlund made his feature film debut in 2005 with 'Gitarrmogoet', which won the FIPRESCI prize at Moscow Film Festival. His followup feature 'Involuntary' (2008) premiered in the Un Certain Regard competition at Cannes Film Festival. In 2010 he won the Golden Bear for his short film 'Händelse vid bank'. His third feature film 'Play' premiered in the Directors Fortnight selection at Cannes Film Festival.

Östlund's big international breakthrough came with 'Force Majeure' (2014), which won the main prize in the Un Certain Regard selection and was nominated for both a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. Östlund won the Palme d'Or with 'The Square' (2017), which was later nominated for an Oscar. 'Triangle of Sadness' (2021) is his next project.
