Bier's "After the Wedding" competing for an Oscar nomination 2007

Susanne Bier’s feature film "After the Wedding" is selected as the Danish entrant for the Academy Award Nominations 2007 (category: Best Foreign Language Film). The decision was made by Danish film industry representatives and the DFI.

Produced by Sisse Graum Jørgensen for Zentropa Productions, "After the Wedding" has sold some 400.000 tickets in Danish cinemas.

Bier’s film, sold for distribution in the USA, opened internationally at Toronto film festival (7-16 September 2006), where it received a warm welcome from the North American public.

The film is competing for a European Film Award nomination, and is nominated for a Nordic Council Film Prize.

Director of a number of successful Danish feature films ("Brothers", 2004; "Open Hearts", 2002 and "The One and Only", 1999), Bier has achieved international renown, and is currently directing the Hollywood production "Things We Lost in the Fire" with Halle Berry and Benico Del Toro.

Writer Anders Thomas Jensen, himself a successful film director and one of Denmark’s most prolific writers for the screen, penned "After the Wedding", as well as worked on Bier’s two previous films. After an Oscar nomination for two short films in 1996 and 1997, Jensen’s third try brought him an Academy Award for the short film "Election Night", 1998. Since, he has stood behind a number of Danish feature film successes.

Oscar nominations will be announced 23 January 2007, while Oscar night is set for 25 February.

On two previous occasions Danish feature films have been credited with an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film: Gabriel Axel’s "Babette’s Feast", 1987 and Bille August’s "Pelle the Conqueror".
