Film and Art Going East

CHINA. As part of the largest single display ever of Danish art and culture in China, films and filmmakers will over the next nine months present their films and exchange knowhow with their Chinese peers. Documentary films are first on the film agenda.

Danish documentary film has in recent years seen an increased interest from China. Now, as part of the largest single exposition to date of Danish art and culture in the country, a string of workshops and festivals will be held over the next two months focusing on documentary filmmaking.

During November Danish documentaries will be on show in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. In December, filmmakers from Denmark and China will be sharing knowledge and experiences when CPH:DOX launches a string of workshops, lectures and film screenings in Beijing.

An essential motivation lying behind this display of Danish films is the aspect of cultural exchange, says Steffen Andersen-Møller, Head of Audience & Promotion at the Danish Film Institute.

"An important ambition is to establish new partnerships and creative networks between Danish and Chinese filmmakers. Danish films are already present at important festivals in China, and with this unique cultural initiative we can prepare the ground for even stronger and more long-term ties with China."

The Danish Minister for Culture Marianne Jelved is currently in China to launch the Danish culture programme, which runs until July 2015.

In addition to the Danish Film Institute, a wide range of Danish cultural institutions are taking part in the initiative including  the National Gallery of Denmark, the Museums of South West Jutland, the National Museum of Denmark, the Viking Ship Museum, the Danish Dance Theatre, and Granhøj Dance troupe. In addition, a selection of Danish children and youth theatres and music groups will be performing.
