Ron Kovic tog stolt af sted for at kæmpe i Vietnam, men da han kom hjem i kørestol, opdagede han bittert hvordan stemningen i landet var vendt mod krigen. Langsomt begyndte han også selv at tvivle på systemets fortræffelighed, lod sit hår vokse og begyndte at deltage aktivt i anti-Vietnamdemonstrationerne.
