The Exhibited

Jesper Jargil, Denmark, 2000

80 min.DK/Documentary

Witness the birth of Dogme. For two months, Danish director, Lars von Trier, turned an Art Museum into a living installation, developing the artistic principles that later fostered the award winning feature films, »Idioterne«/»The Idiots« and »Festen«/»The Celebration«. 53 characters inhabiting 19 rooms - their moods dictated by the movements of unsuspecting ants in New Mexico - gradually transcend the subtle line between fiction and reality. As if under a microscope, basic human instincts are explored uncompromisingly. Intercut with the fictional narrative evolving during the exhibition, the actors in hindsight reflect over the process - and Shakespeare's words: 'Life is a Stage' have never been more true ...
