Filmen er en musikalsk komedie om Darren, en smart reklamemand i New York, der må rejse tilbage til sin hjemby i Alabama for at få udbetalt arven efter sin netop afdøde tante. Han får sig en noget af en overraskelse, da han først skal danne et gospelkor, før arven kan udbetales. Spørgsmålet er hvordan Darren på kort tid kan få samlet et kor, som er dygtig nok til at deltage i den årlige konkurrence for gospelkor.
