Caroline bliver ansat for at tage sig af den lamme gamle Ben Devereaux, så han kan leve sin sidste tid sammen med sin kone Violet i et gammalt hus, der ligger langt ude en sump. Men den gamle plantageejendom gemmer på en uhyggelig historie, som kaster lange skygger. På en eller anden måde virker den gamle Ben skræmt, og Caroline får mistanke om, at der ligger okkulte ritualer bag hans frygt.
