I 1800-tallet stilles en ung, eksotisk pige for retten i England, anklaget for betleri. Her kommer det frem, at hun angiveligt er kongedatter fra en ø ved Java, og hun overdrages til godset Knole. Men en tvivlende journalist begynder at granske hendes baggrund, og et helt andet eventyr tegner sig. Filmen bygger på en autentisk beretning.
