Nine year-old Lora arrives at a secluded monastery in the mountains together with her dog, Hound. The nun, Sister Esperanza, has escorted them there and she has promised Lora that the Monastery will be a much better place for Lora to live. As soon as they are inside the great wall surrounding the monastery, Lora and Hound are separated, and Lora is sent off to take a bath and to get dressed in uniform as the rules of the Monastery prescribe. That same night, Hound is put down and Lora must now, both through
her friendship with the shepherd-boy Nick and her own lively imagination, find a way to survive the strict rules of the Monastery. A place that does not leave room for any emotion, individuality or any breaking of the house rules, that have been carried out for generations.
