En videnskabsmand vender tilbage til England efter at have været nogle år på Sydpolen og erfarer at en ung mand, som han tog op som blaffer den dag han skulle rejse, i mellemtiden er blevet hængt for mordet på sin mor, fordi han ikke kunne gøre rede for sin færden på netop det tidspunkt hvor han sad i videnskabsmandens bil. Denne sætter nu en ære i at rense den unge mand, men møder modstand fra den hængtes slægtninge, der ikke ønsker at der bliver gravet i den gamle sag.
