En arbejdsløs lærer fra South Carolina tager til New York for at tale med sin søsters psykiater efter søsterens selvmordsforsøg. I et forsøg på at hjælpe søsteren, blotlægger han familiens grusomme hemmeligheder for lægen. Han har selv personlige problemer og lægen ligeså, og de to vidt forskellige mennesker finder ind til hinanden og forelsker sig.
