Actor. Born 22/11 1965. The younger brother of actor Lars Mikkelsen.
Graduated from Aarhus Theatre's acting school in 1996 after working as a dancer for a number of years.
Mikkelsen got his breakthrough as a film actor in Nicolas Winding Refn's influential debut 'Pusher' (1996), which was selected for Toronto among other festivals. Their collaboration continued on films such as 'Bleeder' (1999), 'Pusher II' (2004) and 'Valhalla Rising' (2009), which was selected for main competition at Venice Film Festival.
He also collaborated with Anders Thomas Jensen on the films 'Flickering Lights' (2000), selected for Berlin and Cannes, 'The Green Butchers' (2003), selected for Toronto, 'Adam's Apples' (2005), selected for Toronto, Sundance and the Berlinale, 'Men & Chicken' (2015), selected for Toronto, and the upcoming 'Riders of Justice' (2020).
He also worked with Susanne Bier on a number of films: 'Open Hearts' (2002) was selected for Toronto, 'After the Wedding (2006) was nominated for an Oscar.
Other notable works include the series 'Unit 1' (2000), 'Flame & Citron' (2008), Oscar nominated 'A Royal Affair' (2012) and Thomas Vinterbreg's Oscar nominated 'The Hunt' (2013), which earned Mikkelsen the Actor's prize at Cannes Film Festival. His collaboration with Vinterbreg continued with 'Another Round' (2020), which earned Mikkelsen the actor's trophy at San Sebastián Film Festival (shared with his three co-actors). The film also earned Mikkelsen a European Film Award for best actor.
Mikkelsen has also had international success with roles in films such as 'King Arthur' (2004), 'Casino Royale' (2006), the TV series 'Hannibal' (2013-2015), 'Doctor Strange' (2016), 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' (2016) and 'Arctic' (2019), which was selected for Cannes.
In 2011, Mikkelsen was the recipient of a European Film Award for his contribution to World Cinema. He was part of the main competition jury at Cannes Film Festival in 2016.
