Charlie Babbitt lever en tilværelse, hvor penge spiller en meget væsentlig rolle. Da hans far dør, regner han med at arve en formue, men bliver meget overrasket over, at hele arven går til hans bror, Raymond, som han slet ikke vidste eksisterede.
