Sherman McCoy, en af Wall Streets gulddrenge, henter sin elskerinde i Kennedy lufthavnen, vælger på tilbagevejen til Manhattan en forkert frakørsel og havner i Bronx hvor hans Mercedes kommer til at påkøre en ung sort mand. Dette bliver starten til Shermans fald fra at være en af Universets herskere, for hvem alt tilsyneladende lykkes, til at havne på noget der ligner det amerikanske samfunds bund.
