Filmen skildrer den unge Tom Ripley, der bliver sendt til Italien for at forsøge at hente rigmandssønnen Dickie Greenleaf hjem til USA. Da Tom bliver forelsket i Dickies søde liv udvikler der sig langsomt et farligt spil mellem dem.
