Filmen er en filmatisering af 2. bog i eventyrtriologien om ringenes herre og viderefører handlingen i filmen "Eventyret om ringen". Hobitten Frodo har i første film fået overdraget en kraftfuld ring og har fået til opgave at destruere den for at redde verden. Han forsøger i denne film sammen med sin tro væbner Sam og væsnet Gollum at trænge ind i centret for de onde kræfter for her at tilintetgøre ringen. Imens udkæmper nogle af hans venner kampe imod de onde væsner for at redde menneskene.
