Under depressionen i 1930'erne i USA mister en midaldrende mand sit arbejde. Han har en lille søn, som han har ansvaret for. For sine sidste penge køber han en avis med jobopslag. Men i takt med at han igen og igen bliver afvist, mister han glæden og troen på livet, men sønnens fantasi og uskyldige leg kan måske hjælpe ham tilbage til glæden.
