En high-school elev, Marty McFly, bliver ved en fejltagelse sendt 30 år tilbage i tiden med en tidsmaskine. Marty befinder sig da i 1955 (før han blev født), og møder sine kommende forældre og må dramatisk gribe ind i historien for at sikre sine kommende forældres rendez-vous, og dermed sin egen fremtid.
